A compact way to get your daily shot, the DeLonghi Alicia Electric Moka espresso maker satisfies the dueling needs for convenience and caffeine. Italian in origin and engineering, DeLonghi is well respected for its small appliance innovations, and this unit boasts several, from durable construction to safety features. The sturdy aluminum boiler is built for frequent use, and the container is transparent to let you track the brewing progress. The Alicia also automatically switches off when you remove the coffee-maker from the base. Additional helpful features include an indicator light, a cool-touch handle, and a swiveling base. Measuring 5.12 by 8.27 by 10.63 inches, the Alicia churns out 3 to 6 cups of espresso. The 3-cup adaptor is available separately. --Emily Bedard

From the Manufacturer

Moka is the Italian Way to Make Espresso

Authentic espresso is the heritage of the Italian culture and tradition, and the great Italian tradition of coffee making began with moka. Found in most Italian kitchens for more than half a century, moka produces an inherently aromatic espresso. It is more intense in flavor, and more pure in coffee taste. That is why generations of Italians have sworn by stovetop moka espresso makers.

In fact, in Italy every family owns at least two mokas. Used on the stovetop, the heat from the burner boils the water and directs it up through the ground coffee and into the receptacle, producing a perfect espresso every time.

Why an Electric Moka Espresso Maker? Although the traditional stovetop moka makes great espresso, people have been searching for a safe, convenient and easy-to-use alternative. The new six-cup machine embodies DeLonghi’s commitment to its Italian heritage and innovative kitchen design. The Electric Moka Espresso Maker is a modern-day, convenience-minded adaptation of a beloved Italian staple.

Electric Moka Espresso Maker Features:

  • 3- to 6-cup espresso capacity
  • Transparent Coffee Container lets you easily monitor the entire brewing process. And the durable container is easy-to-clean.
  • Filter Adapter allows you to choose 3 or 6 cups of espresso, so you can select the amount of espresso to make depending on the number of people you’re serving.
  • Automatic Shut-Off With Keep Warm Function keeps espresso hot for up to 30 minutes. And with automatic safety shut-off, your espresso will never burn or overflow.
  • Two-Level Safety System will automatically shut-off the machine when the unit is finished brewing and when the body is lifted from the base.
  • Cordless Operation with Detachable Base makes serving convenient and simple. You can bring your espresso right to the table.
  • On/Off Switch with Indicator Light Easy-to-use illuminated push-button control lets you know when the unit is in operation.
  • Pressurized Safety Valve ensures safe operation.
  • Aluminum Boiler is made of durable, high-quality aluminum. Count on getting great espresso for years to come.

How to Make the Perfect Italian Espresso in Just a Few Simple Steps:

  1. Fill the aluminum boiler with water.

  2. Fill the filter with ground coffee.

  3. Attach the transparent coffee container to the base.

  4. Plug in and switch the push button to the ON position.

1/20/06 First reviewed: I received this as a gift and had about twenty wonderful cups of moka from this cute little electric machine, but then one day in the third week of ownership, steam went a'flyin outside of the moka maker instead of into the top chamber. I called customer service and was given a run-around, ugh. I was told that without a receipt I could buy the replacement unit for around $40 plus shipping. She said that most of their products have a 30 or 60 day warranty, which surprised me greatly. Since I'd owned the product for less than 30 days, I figured I was still in the warranty time any way one looked at it, but I was wrong. With no receipt, no exchange from DeLonghi. Well, I tried to use the unit after really tightening the top and bottom together and the escaping steam abated. The next week, the shut off valve on the heating unit started making a terrible noise and the unit wouldn't even start. It would be triggered within a few seconds to shut off, so I had... Read more

What I initially liked about this machine is the fact that I could use it off the stovetop and it really is not a counter hog--I bought it for my office, actually. I was surprised at how piping hot the coffee can get in it. All in all, it works well. Realize, too, this moka brew is definately a step down in flavor from traditionally brewed espresso (from a pump-driven machine). I recommend it.

I'm on my 2nd Electric Moka machine. The first one died when the plastic piece on top cracked near the handle and it began to leak. I realize now that it cracked from tightening the top piece by rotating the plastic handle rather than grabbing the metal mid-section. I also realize that I began tightening it extra tight when the rubber washer inside started to wear out. So that's the deal. Replace the washer when it gets ragged and don't screw the pot together with the plastic handle. Do these two things and the machine will last ages. BTW, it makes FANTASTIC espresso, is easy to clean, is compact and very cute. I love it!!!

Every family in Italy owns one of these machines. Here are a few tips:
1. In Italy this is NOT called an espresso machine, but a Moka machine. An espresso is what you would drink in bar made with a steam or high pressure machine with the crema on top.
2. Smaller size Moka machine tend to make better coffee.
3. Never wash the Moka with detergents, just rinse it under tap water
4. You've gotta use it often for a good coffee.
5. If you haven't use it in a while, make a weak coffee ("lungo") and discard
6. DO NOT put the MOka in the dishwasher.
7. Use drinking water. Avoid tap water especially if very chlorinated
8. Never compress the coffee.
9. For a strong coffee fill the filter with ground coffee and make a small cupola that slightly protrudes beyond the rim. Do not press down.
10. For best coffee, heat at very low heat. It's ok if it takes 10min.
11. As soon as coffee reaches the top, remove from heat
12. Do... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars The best -- straight from Italy!, February 1, 2004
About 12 years ago I was in Milan, and a friend gave me one of these to take home. I have used it nearly every day since (I don't take it out of town), so that should give you an idea of how sturdy it is. It is the best coffee maker I have ever owned. To compare, I also have a high-tech espresso machine with frother; a state-of-the-art automatic drip coffeemaker; a French Press; and a different style of stovetop maker, which, surprisingly, makes a different brew. But I ALWAYS go back to my Bialetti Moka 6-cup for the best espresso and lattes. You even will get a crema effect with this simple pot. For lattes, I simply fill half a coffee mug with milk, heat it in the microwave until it's hot, and then top it off with espresso. It's low-maintenance -- every once in a while I replace the internal rubber gasket, which costs a buck or so, depending upon where you buy it. If you like your coffee like the Italians and the Cubans, then you will like the brew this serves. I am loyal to this... Read more

Works great on the stovetop, works great when you're CAMPING..!!! No plugs, no cords, no nonsense -- fill the lower half with water to the indicated mark, put your grounds in the upper basket, join the two halves, wait for it to gurgle and you have EXCEPTIONALLY DELICIOUS espresso the way it ought to be made.

The device is simple and beautifully made. I'd recommend the six-cup version, the smaller versions just don't make very much espresso -- I mean, get the six-cup version if there are two of you, since that will make an adequate amount.

Really a brilliant product. I wish that everything was so well-designed and robust. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

This review is from: Capresso 465 CoffeeTeam TS 10-Cup Digital Coffeemaker with Conical Burr Grinder and Thermal Carafe (Kitchen)
Let me start by saying that I've been a big fan of grind and brew coffee makers. I know full well what to expect. My last grind and brew was a Cuisinart DGB-550 which means I was already accustomed to cleaning 7 different parts every time I made a pot of coffee and having my cats run for cover when the grinding began. The Cusinart had served me well for over a year but I really wanted something with a thermal carafe and I was excited for the prospect of a burr grinder. On weekends it can take me hours to drink a pot and I hated having my coffee cook during that time. Not to mention the wasted electricity while keeping that carafe piping hot for hours.

PROS
====
1) Conical burr grinder. The burr modules spin at lower speeds than standard burr grinders, imparting less heat to the beans.
2) SUPER easy clean up. I don't think anyone can beat this model when it comes to clean up. Just 4 parts -- 3 if you use paper filters. The carafe, carafe lid,... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Huge Design Update!! Happy to Have the Coffee Fairies Back!, December 2, 2009

This review is from: Capresso 465 CoffeeTeam TS 10-Cup Digital Coffeemaker with Conical Burr Grinder and Thermal Carafe (Kitchen)
I usually buy through Amazon, but ordered from another site because I didn't want to wait another 3 weeks Amazon Time to get my hands on this coffee maker. I've had it for a little over a week now, it replaces a 7 year old Capresso CoffeeTeam, and I love the new design. The most noticeable design change is the narrow profile with direct feed grinding, thankfully doing away with the notoriously cantankerous swing-arm. I'm also glad to upgrade to the thermal carafe this time around, I don't always get around to drinking my coffee when I intend to, so it's nice not to have the coffee burning on the warmer. This is the best grind-and-brew system around, but there are still some tweaks Capresso could make to bring this to perfection.

1.) The thermal carafe is designed in a way that makes it impossible to get every last drop of coffee out, you'll always end out with 2-3 tablespoons of sad wasted coffee in the bottom. (I guess you could use a straw if you were desperate!)... Read more

This review is from: Capresso 465 CoffeeTeam TS 10-Cup Digital Coffeemaker with Conical Burr Grinder and Thermal Carafe (Kitchen)
I can't say enough about this machine. I bought this baby about 3 weeks ago and I could not be happier. Let me start by simply saying this combination grinder/brewer makes the BEST COFFEE I've ever tasted out of a home machine. And, after all, isn't that the most important thing? There are multiple user available tool to change the coarsness of the grind, the amount of grounds that enter the filter, and the "aroma" of the overall process. If you like strong coffee the 10 setting, even with a full pot, is as strong as any cup of Starbucks I've ever had. If you like "weaker coffee" you can can simply reduce the amount of beans you use. So, for coffee taste and flexibility/adjustability this machine gets an A+

Probably the next most important thing is the appearance. We looked at the Coffeeteam Therm - I really liked the idea of the grinding process being separated from the brewing process. That seemed important to avoid the problem the Cuisinart's have where the... Read more
